How and Why Mitchell E. Cohen Got into Family Law

When someone finds out that an attorney practices family law – especially when that attorney does so exclusively – that attorney may get a number of reactions. “It takes a special kind,” or something to that effect, is a common response. There’s no doubt that, in many ways, family law occupies its own little world in civil litigation. Unlike a breach of contract or business partnership dispute, family law matters are deeply intimate in nature. They affect the most important relationships of our lives: with our spouses, our children, and our parents.

So we would agree, it does take a special kind of attorney to tackle the range of emotional challenges and practical complexities that come with resolving child custody, divorce, and other domestic issues. Mitchell E. Cohen is that attorney, and here he explains how and why he stepped into the family law arena and what he brings to this practice area as the founding member of Cohen Family Law.

Educational background and professional experience

Mr. Cohen is a graduate of New York Law School, earning his Juris Doctorate in 1982. Since October of that year, Mr. Cohen has been practicing in Arizona, and practices exclusively in the area of family law. This focus gives him an advantage over other law firms and attorneys that practice in a wide range of areas or merely “dabble” in domestic cases.

Mr. Cohen previously owned the Law Office of Mitchell E. Cohen in Tempe, Arizona, before starting Cohen Family Law. He has been the lead attorney in over 3,000 family law matters, honing his legal knowledge and experience along the way. His extensive practice covers all cases that are handled in Arizona’s family court system, including divorce, child support, child custody, spousal support, and marital property division. Mr. Cohen is licensed to practice in all Arizona state courts, as well as the U.S. District Court, the United States Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of the United States.

A unique approach to family law

While education and experience are necessary foundations of solid legal counsel, they are only the basics that every competent family law practitioner should possess. Mr. Cohen goes further than this in his mission to deliver customized representation to every client. He recognizes the unique life circumstances and needs of each individual who walks through his door. No two child custody cases are alike, for instance, so he understands how important it is to treat each case according to its individual facts.

In addition to being fully appreciative of the emotional aspects of divorce and other family law matters, Mr. Cohen knows that these cases also have financial consequences for spouses, parents, and children. The settlements and decisions that are reached will impact a client’s property, income, and wealth, possibly for years to come. That is why we explore alternative means to settle cases, such as mediation, which can not only save considerable sums of money versus litigation but which can allow clients to devise creative, cost-saving solutions to their divorce or other matters.

Additionally, our firm advocates for clients’ financial interests wherever they intersect with family law. That primarily includes child support, spousal support, and marital property and debt division. Mr. Cohen recognizes, for instance, that parents on both sides of child support have legitimate financial concerns. A soon-to-be single mother has a serious need for child support so she can provide for her children. Conversely, a father may be asked to pay much more support than he believes he can realistically afford. Because we represent spouses and parents on both sides of family law cases, we understand both points of view and the financial considerations of each.

Guiding You Through the Difficulties of Family Law Litigation and Mediation

Finally, attorney Mitchell Cohen knows full well that regardless of what type of family law case you have, it is likely one of the most difficult life experiences you will face. Many parents and spouses are apprehensive about the prospect of litigating or even mediating their disputes and are unaware of what to expect as their cases begin. Mr. Cohen understands that, which is why he represents every client with the professionalism and respect they deserve, counseling them from the beginning to the end of their cases and addressing their questions and concerns each step of the way.
