Dealing With the Stress of Divorce

How Can I Make the Divorce Process Better?

How you manage the dissolution of your marriage will impact your life post-divorce. Getting a divorce can be one of the most stressful times in your life, but there are steps you can take to make it easier on yourself and your children. The following suggestions can be implemented to assist you in managing your divorce.

Be empathetic when communicating with your children.

If you are a parent, you may want to relinquish some control to your children to make sure the children feel loved and valued. Give them a say in small, day-to-day decisions such as sleeping arrangements or home decoration, or even consult them about where to go on vacation and developing new family traditions.

Get counseling for you and your children.

This can be a very difficult time for all those involved. Going it alone may be too much to ask. The end of a marriage can be like a death, and it needs to be understood and grieved by all parties. Learn from the past and plan for the future.

Don’t take it out on your kids.

Divorce can cause an otherwise perfectly calm, rational adult to behave like an irrational, immature child. This will not do you or your children any good. Do not offload your fears and negative emotions about your ex on your kids.

Act how you want your children to act.

Children learn more from how their parents act than from what they say. Whether you like it or not, your children are watching you and how you deal with every situation. Show your kids that, although your marriage has ended, it is not the end of your happiness.

Of course, retaining a seasoned divorce attorney can help greatly reduce the stress involved.  If you are in the Phoenix, Arizona area and have questions about divorce or have decided getting a divorce is right for you, the attorneys at Cohen Family Law can inform you about Arizona divorce laws and what the process entails.
